About: A modern white house in the hills behind Faro, built by the architect Pedro Domingos out of an old ruin at the end of a dirt road. It's simple and clean, with sharp lines, big windows and white walls, set among old olive, almond and cork trees with a pool out front. Four bedrooms, sleeps eight, with a fireplace, a big kitchen and the option of a private chef.

About: A small design retreat in the Cantabrian mountains of northern Spain, in the green Valles Pasiegos, built by the architect Laura Alvarez as her own home. It's a modern take on the old Pasiego stone cabins of the area: rough stone walls outside, warm wood inside, with two big windows in the living room that frame the mountains like paintings.
